Sex-offender screening API for visitor management systems

Run a registry check at every sign-in: scan the ID, send the name and date of birth, and get a scored answer across 58 US registries before the badge prints — one API call from your kiosk, tablet or front-desk app.

No code needed — search from your dashboard, or integrate the full API when you’re ready.

Screening challenges for visitor management and school check-in platforms

  • The check has to finish while the visitor is still standing at the desk
  • Common names flood the front office with false alarms that staff learn to ignore
  • A visitor registered in another state is invisible to a single-state lookup
  • Districts ask their vendor exactly which registries the check covers

What sex offender screening gives visitor management and school check-in platforms

  • A registry answer before the badge prints
  • Fewer false alarms at the front desk
  • Out-of-state registrations caught at check-in
  • A logged, source-referenced result for every visit

Sex offender screening built for visitor management systems

Built for the ID scan

Send the name and date of birth your scanner already reads from the license. Date of birth drives the match, so one Robert Johnson at the door is not every Robert Johnson in the country.

Scored, explained matches

Every candidate returns with matchConfidence and matchBasis, so your interface can separate a date-of-birth match from a name-only one and alert staff only on what deserves it.

58 US registries, one request

The 50 states, DC and the US territories in a single call — no per-state integrations to build, and one answer to give a district that asks what the check covers.

A photo for the front desk

Records carry the registry photo where the registry publishes one, so staff can compare the face in front of them before anyone acts on a match.

Recurring visitors, monitored

Put regular volunteers and parent helpers under monitoring and get alerted when a registry status changes, instead of treating every weekly visit as a first visit.

Drop-in for offenders.io integrations

A compatibility endpoint accepts the offenders.io request parameters and returns the same envelope, so an existing integration switches by changing the base URL and key.

Where screening fits

When visitor management and school check-in platforms run a sex offender check

At the front desk, at check-in

The ID is scanned and the registry search runs before a badge prints.

Before a pre-registered visit

Contractors and scheduled visitors can be screened before they arrive.

For repeat visitors and volunteers

People who visit often can be monitored instead of re-searched at every check-in.

During an incident review

Logs of who was screened, when and with what result support a later review.

Step by step

Visitor Management Systems screening workflow

  1. Parse name and date of birth from the ID. Driver’s license barcodes carry both.
  2. Call the search API at check-in. One call across the 58 US registries, returned fast enough for a front desk.
  3. Show a review prompt, not a verdict. Strong matches go to a staff member, who compares the photo and the official record link.
  4. Apply the site’s policy and log it. Escort, deny or admit, with the decision recorded.
  5. Bill per search. No floor; resell to your customers on your own pricing.
The legal picture

Visitor Management Systems screening: what the law requires and what it doesn’t

Schools are the largest market for visitor screening, and the rules are mostly district and state policy rather than federal law. Claims that a federal statute requires schools to screen visitors against the registry are not accurate, so build features around customer policy rather than a mandate. Hospitals, apartment buildings and corporate campuses use the same check-in screening for their own policies.

Accuracy at the front desk matters more than anywhere else, because a false match embarrasses a parent in front of other people. Each result carries a match score, the reason it matched and a photo where the source publishes one, so staff can confirm or clear a match in seconds.

How to run it well

Screening practices for visitor management and school check-in platforms

Match on date of birth, not name alone

An ID scan gives you both. Name-only matching against a sex-offender registry is the exact pattern regulators have penalized screening vendors for; a date-of-birth match is what makes an alert worth acting on.

Route alerts to a person, discreetly

The protocol that holds up: a quiet alert to a designated staff member, identity confirmed against the photo, the visitor escorted or held at the desk, and the district’s plan followed. A match is never announced at the counter.

Log every check, clear or not

A timestamped record of each screen — the clean ones included — is what a district shows when a parent or an auditor asks whether screening actually ran on the day that matters.

Monitor the regulars

Volunteers and parent helpers come back every week. Monitoring catches a change in status between visits, which a sign-in check alone only finds on the next visit.

Visitor Management Systems screening FAQ

How fast is a check at sign-in?

The sync endpoint answers from our current snapshot rather than dialling out to each registry, and every response reports its own elapsedMs so you can measure it against your kiosk flow. Sending the date of birth narrows the search and keeps it quick.

Does federal law require schools to screen visitors?

No federal statute requires it. School visitor screening is set by state law and district policy, and both vary. The federal law most often cited as the school background-check law, 20 U.S.C. § 7926, does not mandate checks at all — it bars helping a known abuser get a new job. Check the rules in the states your customers operate in.

What should the kiosk do on a possible match?

Alert trained staff quietly — never a red screen in front of the visitor. Show them the match basis and the registry photo. A name-only match is a lead, not an identification: confirm the date of birth and the photo before anyone acts, then follow the district’s protocol.

Do you catch visitors who registered in another state?

Yes. A default search runs across all 58 US registries, so a registration in another state surfaces at the door just as a local one does.

Can we avoid re-checking the same volunteers every week?

Yes. Put recurring visitors under monitoring and we alert you when their registry status changes, so the per-visit check is only needed for people you have not seen before.

We use offenders.io today. How hard is it to switch?

Most integrations switch by changing the base URL and API key: the compatibility endpoint takes the offenders.io parameters and returns the same response envelope. The migration guide in the docs maps every parameter and lists what the native endpoint adds.

Can our customers use results in California?

California restricts how Megan’s Law information may be used — including for employment, education and business services — unless the use protects a person at risk or another law authorizes it (Penal Code § 290.46(j)). Have counsel confirm how your customers’ use fits before you enable screening there.

Is visitor screening against the registry required in schools?

It is usually district or state policy rather than federal law. Check the policy for each customer.

How fast is the search?

Searches against our index return in time for a front-desk check-in. Live verification at the source is slower and optional.

Can we white-label it?

Yes. The API returns data; your product shows it in your own interface.

Two products, one integration
