King County, WA street plan with a one-mile ring around an address
King County, WA: the one-mile ring a search draws around an address. An illustration of scale, not a record or a location.

King County is home to about 2,271,380 people (US Census Bureau, 2023 estimate), about the same as at the 2020 census: 29% of Washington’s residents, the most populous of its 39 counties. People arrested anywhere in King County are, with few exceptions, booked into the King County Correctional Facility/Maleng RJC, which is run by the King County sheriff's office. A search here reads that roster together with Washington's state prison records and federal custody, so one search says whether the person is in the King County jail, in a Washington prison, or in a federal facility, and names the one that holds them.

A roster is a picture of custody at a moment. Most jails list only the people held right now, so someone released this morning usually drops off the official list today, while the booking itself stays in the records a search can reach. If the person you are looking for was released, the result will say so where the jail published a release date; if they were moved to a state prison after sentencing, the Washington prison record takes over.

King County inmate search: how to find out if someone is in the King County jail.

Start with the full name and add an age or a date of birth: a county the size of King County has many people who share a first and last name, and the second detail is what moves the right one to the top. A middle name or initial helps when the jail publishes it. If you only know a nickname, try the formal name too, since booking records use the name on the identification the person carried.

A search here is the quickest route; where King County publishes its own roster it is the place to confirm current custody before you act on anything. Each result says which facility holds the person and when they were booked.

Three ways to check King County jail custody

  1. Search the name here with an age or date of birth: the King County Correctional Facility/Maleng RJC roster, Washington prisons and federal custody in one result.
  2. Ask the King County sheriff's office, which runs the King County Correctional Facility/Maleng RJC and keeps the custody record.
  3. Check the court: a person who was booked and released has a case in the Superior Court or the District Court or a municipal court; see King County court records.

What a King County jail record shows.

A jail record is made when someone is taken into custody at the King County Correctional Facility/Maleng RJC. It says the person was booked on a date, on the charges written down at booking, and whether bond was set. It is an arrest-stage record and never says the person was convicted: the charge filed by a prosecutor can differ from the charge at booking, and the outcome lives in the court file kept by the County Clerk.

Jails publish different amounts. Some give a full date of birth, others an age; some give the bond amount and type, others only that a hold exists; some list the arresting agency and the court date, others neither. The record you see is what King County chose to publish, and a blank field means the jail left it blank, not that the fact does not exist.

How long people stay in the King County jail.

There is no county-wide answer, and this page does not state one for any person. In general, a jail stay has three shapes. The shortest is a booking followed by release within a day or two, once a judge sets bond or releases the person on their own recognizance at a first appearance. The second is pre-trial custody: someone held because bond was denied or could not be posted stays until the case is resolved, which can be weeks or months. The third is a sentence: a conviction with a term of up to about a year is usually served in the county jail rather than a state prison.

The jail record shows the booking date and, once it happens, the release date. It does not show why a person is still held, and a long stay is not evidence of anything about the case. For the status of the case itself, the court file at the County Clerk is the authoritative record.

King County jail or Washington state prison: which one holds the person. Two systems, two record types, one search.

County jail

King County Correctional Facility/Maleng RJC

Holds people just arrested, waiting for court, or serving a short sentence. Searchable here through the King County Correctional Facility/Maleng RJC roster, with the booking date and charges.

State prison

Washington Department of Corrections

Holds people serving a Washington sentence after conviction. In the search, with facility and admission date.

Federal custody

Federal Bureau of Prisons

A separate system from every state. Someone facing a federal charge is held by the US Marshals or in a federal facility, which the search also reaches.

Searching beyond King County? The inmate search covers state prisons and county jails; the federal inmate search covers federal custody.

King County jail FAQ

How do I find out if someone is in King County jail right now?

Search the person's name here: the search covers the King County Correctional Facility/Maleng RJC roster, Washington state prisons and federal custody, and each result names the facility. Adding an age or date of birth tells people with the same name apart.

What does a King County jail roster entry show?

The person's name, an age or date of birth, the booking date, each charge recorded at booking and, where the jail publishes it, the bond amount and a release date. It is an arrest-stage record: it says the person was booked, not that they were convicted.

Does King County jail publish mugshots?

Where King County publishes a booking photo it stays on the official roster, usually only while the person is held. This page shows none, and OffenderSearch never charges to remove one.

How long does someone stay in King County jail?

It depends on the case, not the county. Many people leave within a day or two after bond is set or they are released on their own recognizance; people held without bond, or who cannot post it, can stay until the case is resolved; and a sentence of up to about a year is usually served in a county jail rather than a state prison. Nothing on this page states a stay for any person.

Is King County jail the same as a Washington state prison?

No. The King County Correctional Facility/Maleng RJC holds people who were just arrested, are waiting for court or are serving a short sentence. A Washington state prison holds people serving a sentence after conviction. A search here checks both, plus federal custody.

Can I use the King County jail roster to screen a tenant or an employee?

No. A search here is not a consumer report. A hiring, tenant, credit or insurance decision needs an FCRA-regulated report from a consumer reporting agency, with the person's written consent.
