Virginia Beach, VA: the one-mile ring a search draws around an address. An illustration of scale, not a record or a location.

The City of Virginia Beach is home to about 453,649 people (US Census Bureau, 2023 estimate), down 1.3% since the 2020 census: 5% of Virginia’s residents, the 3rd most populous of its 133 counties and independent cities. People arrested anywhere in the City of Virginia Beach are, with few exceptions, booked into the Virginia Beach Correctional Center, which is run by the Virginia Beach sheriff's office. A search here reads that roster together with Virginia's state prison records and federal custody, so one search says whether the person is in the Virginia Beach jail, in a Virginia prison, or in a federal facility, and names the one that holds them.

A roster is a picture of custody at a moment. Most jails list only the people held right now, so someone released this morning usually drops off the official list today, while the booking itself stays in the records a search can reach. If the person you are looking for was released, the result will say so where the jail published a release date; if they were moved to a state prison after sentencing, the Virginia prison record takes over.

Virginia Beach inmate search: how to find out if someone is in the Virginia Beach jail.

Start with the full name and add an age or a date of birth: a county the size of Virginia Beach has many people who share a first and last name, and the second detail is what moves the right one to the top. A middle name or initial helps when the jail publishes it. If you only know a nickname, try the formal name too, since booking records use the name on the identification the person carried.

A search here is the quickest route; where the City of Virginia Beach publishes its own roster it is the place to confirm current custody before you act on anything. Each result says which facility holds the person and when they were booked.

Three ways to check Virginia Beach jail custody

  1. Search the name here with an age or date of birth: the Virginia Beach Correctional Center roster, Virginia prisons and federal custody in one result.
  2. Ask the Virginia Beach sheriff's office, which runs the Virginia Beach Correctional Center and keeps the custody record.
  3. Check the court: a person who was booked and released has a case in the Circuit Court or the General District Court; see Virginia Beach court records.

What a Virginia Beach jail record shows.

A jail record is made when someone is taken into custody at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center. It says the person was booked on a date, on the charges written down at booking, and whether bond was set. It is an arrest-stage record and never says the person was convicted: the charge filed by a prosecutor can differ from the charge at booking, and the outcome lives in the court file kept by the Clerk of the Circuit Court.

Jails publish different amounts. Some give a full date of birth, others an age; some give the bond amount and type, others only that a hold exists; some list the arresting agency and the court date, others neither. The record you see is what the City of Virginia Beach chose to publish, and a blank field means the jail left it blank, not that the fact does not exist.

How long people stay in the Virginia Beach jail.

There is no county-wide answer, and this page does not state one for any person. In general, a jail stay has three shapes. The shortest is a booking followed by release within a day or two, once a judge sets bond or releases the person on their own recognizance at a first appearance. The second is pre-trial custody: someone held because bond was denied or could not be posted stays until the case is resolved, which can be weeks or months. The third is a sentence: a conviction with a term of up to about a year is usually served in the county jail rather than a state prison.

The jail record shows the booking date and, once it happens, the release date. It does not show why a person is still held, and a long stay is not evidence of anything about the case. For the status of the case itself, the court file at the Clerk of the Circuit Court is the authoritative record.

Virginia Beach jail or Virginia state prison: which one holds the person. Two systems, two record types, one search.

County jail

Virginia Beach Correctional Center

Holds people just arrested, waiting for court, or serving a short sentence. Searchable here through the Virginia Beach Correctional Center roster, with the booking date and charges.

State prison

Virginia Department of Corrections

Holds people serving a Virginia sentence after conviction. In the search, with facility and admission date.

Federal custody

Federal Bureau of Prisons

A separate system from every state. Someone facing a federal charge is held by the US Marshals or in a federal facility, which the search also reaches.

Searching beyond the City of Virginia Beach? The inmate search covers state prisons and county jails; the federal inmate search covers federal custody.

Virginia Beach background check: search a person in the jail records by name.

  • Type a first and last name, and add an age or date of birth so the right person rises to the top.
  • The check searches the Virginia Beach Correctional Center roster with the sex offender registries and the other criminal records of Virginia.
  • One paid check, with a personal account. Nothing renews, and the person is never told.

Virginia Beach jail FAQ

How do I find out if someone is in Virginia Beach jail right now?

Search the person's name here: the search covers the Virginia Beach Correctional Center roster, Virginia state prisons and federal custody, and each result names the facility. Adding an age or date of birth tells people with the same name apart.

What does a Virginia Beach jail roster entry show?

The person's name, an age or date of birth, the booking date, each charge recorded at booking and, where the jail publishes it, the bond amount and a release date. It is an arrest-stage record: it says the person was booked, not that they were convicted.

Does Virginia Beach jail publish mugshots?

Where the City of Virginia Beach publishes a booking photo it stays on the official roster, usually only while the person is held. This page shows none, and OffenderSearch never charges to remove one.

How long does someone stay in Virginia Beach jail?

It depends on the case, not the county. Many people leave within a day or two after bond is set or they are released on their own recognizance; people held without bond, or who cannot post it, can stay until the case is resolved; and a sentence of up to about a year is usually served in a county jail rather than a state prison. Nothing on this page states a stay for any person.

Is Virginia Beach jail the same as a Virginia state prison?

No. The Virginia Beach Correctional Center holds people who were just arrested, are waiting for court or are serving a short sentence. A Virginia state prison holds people serving a sentence after conviction. A search here checks both, plus federal custody.

Can I use the Virginia Beach jail roster to screen a tenant or an employee?

No. A search here is not a consumer report. A hiring, tenant, credit or insurance decision needs an FCRA-regulated report from a consumer reporting agency, with the person's written consent.
